How it works

1

Hospital enrollment

Partner hospitals integrate their blood bank management system with the DHEP API. Inventory levels are synchronized in real time via a lightweight agent installed on-premise.

2

Threshold monitoring

DHEP continuously monitors inventory levels against configurable thresholds per blood type. When a critical threshold is crossed, the alert engine fires automatically.

3

Cross-hospital routing

The routing algorithm identifies partner hospitals with available stock of the required type within the configured geographic radius, ranked by distance and compatibility.

4

Donor alerts (optional)

Citizens who have opted in to the donor alert program receive a push notification if their blood type is urgently needed at a nearby collection point.

RDC case study (anonymized)

In Q4 2024, DHEP deployed the blood alert network across 12 hospitals in the Kinshasa metropolitan area, in partnership with a network of referral hospitals (details anonymized by agreement). The pilot focused on O- and AB+ blood types, which accounted for 67% of emergency transfusion requests.

Prior to the deployment, the median time from critical inventory alert to emergency transfer was 38 minutes. After deployment, this dropped to 4 minutes for cross-hospital transfers and 22 minutes for donor mobilization. In Q1 2025, the system is estimated to have contributed to preventing 47 avoidable deaths due to blood shortage (based on retrospective clinical review).

The system now covers all major blood types and has expanded to include Lubumbashi. Replication in Cameroon (Douala, Yaoundé) is planned for H2 2025.

Citizen donor program

The DHEP citizen donor program allows residents to register their blood type, donation eligibility status, and alert preferences. Consent is granular: donors choose whether to receive push alerts, SMS, or email, and can exclude specific hospital networks from their alert zone. All donor data is encrypted at rest and never shared with third parties.

Donors receive a verifiable digital donor card in their DHEP patient app, accepted at all partner blood collection centers.
